Self taught folk artist k.c. bennett, aka crossgirl, has been creating art all of her life but it wasn’t until 2002 that she began producing the found object art crosses, for which she is known. After long ignoring the calling to create crosses from the old fence pickets in her yard, she finally succumbed after receiving a sign from God.
March 2004 saw the public debut of her art crosses at theMennello Museum of American Art in Orlando, Fl., This was followed by Who-Fest04, in Atlanta , Ga., Platform Florida in Lakeland and the House of Blues, Where the Art Meets the Soul in Orlando , Fl.
Her art has progressed through the years to include found object assemblages of animals, trees, and altered furniture. Using an eclectic mix of recycled odds and oddities, she embellishes her found wood art with a surreal mix of discards which may include lawn flamingos, garter belts, tires, reflectors, broken glass and mannequin hands. Each piece is unique, and while some have obvious themes, the beauty of her artwork is the perspective that the public brings to each creation and projects onto them. It is to be noted that her art is eco-friendly in it’s use of otherwise landfill bound material. Although she does purchase hardware, i.e. screws , nails, and adhesives, unlike artists who comb thrift shops and antique stores, everything that k.c. bennett uses would otherwise be trashed.
In 2010, k.c. discovered oil pastels and has been creating paintings on the back of cartons from the recycling bin. These paintings are mounted on recycled lumber that has been painted with house paint from the recycling center at the landfill. Using bright colors, her work is predominately animal and biblical themes.
